  • Amino acids are important dietary ingredients for all animal types. They are the building blocks for proteins and facilitate the growth of animals. There are a few essential amino acids, which cannot be manufactured by the animal. Thus, their intake is necessary from external sources, to prevent protein breakdown in the body which results in muscle loss or problems with muscle repairs.

    Demand from Aquaculture Industry

Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. The demand for seafood is driving the meat industry as an increasing number of individuals are becoming aware of the health benefits of fish consumption. Fish are low in fats, cholesterol, and carbohydrates and are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which help protect the heart. Fish also provides the essential vitamins and amino acids.
There are about 57 million people across the world who rely on fishing for their livelihood, close to 80% in Asia-Pacific. The trade in fish had grown exponentially in recent decades from just USD 8 billion in 1976 to USD 151 billion in 2016. According to the UN, global consumption of fish has hit an average of 20 kg per person in 2010. FAO report states that the world per-capita fish consumption increased from an average 14.4 kg in the 1990s to 20.2 kg in 2015. The human fish consumption has grown at a CAGR of 14% during the forecast period (2007-2012).

Fish have the capacity to exhibit extremely high growth rates and very high feed conversion efficiency. Therefore high dietary levels of amino acids are required to exploit the high performance potential. In fish, amino acids are a major source of energy for all metabolic processes. Fish have amino acid requirements like any terrestrial species. Young fish have higher requirement for nutrient density compared with older fish, therefore amino acid levels need to be accordingly higher. Environmental constraints in terms of water pollution, in particular with nitrogen and phosphorus require feed formulation based on minimum protein supply and covering essential amino acid needs in the aquaculture industry.

Ban on Synthetic Amino Acids in Organic Feed

Lysine is a synthetic amino acid which is used as a raw material by the compound feed and premix manufacturers in the feed. Lysine is a limiting amino acid (one of the first limiting amino acid), which is intended to supplement any shortages of amino acids in feed for primarily poultry and pigs. The USDA defines organic meat as meat raised for human consumption without additives and minimally processed. The demand for organic meat is acting as a restraint for synthetic amino acids. Over the past 5 year, some organic certifying organizations such as organic prairie no longer allow the use of synthetic amino acids in the feed producing organic meat and animal by-products.

    Key Developments:

    • September 2017: ADM launched a new product PROPLEX DY that is composed of saccharomyces yeast, a source of highly digestible amino acid that offers nutritional benefits to poultry, aquaculture, and swine diets.
    • November 2016: Evonik bided to acquire, a technology package for fermentative production, Methionine from METabolic Explorer (METEX). This bid is expected to be valued at around EUR 45 million.
    • June 2016: Evonik launched a new product ValAMINO that is composed of L-valine, an essential amino acid for animals. Supplementing poultry and swine feed with amino acids will make the feeds even more sustainable and efficient.

Major Players: AJINOMOTO CO. INC., ARCHER DANIELS MIDLAND COMPANY, CARGILL, INC., ROYAL DSM N.V, ADISSEO, amongst others.
