The drought relief which began in 2016 in all provinces (excluding Western Cape and Northern Cape) led to an increase in production in most categories of fresh vegetables compared with the previous years. This caused an oversupply of certain products, such as carrots. This resulted in deflation in some vegetables categories, with the price of carrots, for example, being as low as ZAR3.50 per pack during the review period, as farmers were forced into a price war.
