Butyric acid is a 4-carbon oxychemical. It is a carboxylic acid, which is oily and colorless, and occurs in many dairy products like milk, cheese, and butter. Butyric acid has esters and salts known as butanoates and butyrates. It exhibits an unpleasant smell and also has an acrid taste. It is used in stink bombs for its pungent smell. Some of its derivative chemicals and esters are sweet smelling. The characteristics of the odor depend on precise chemical compositions of the derivatives and esters.
