About Probe Card
Probe cards are testing equipment used by semiconductor device manufacturers to electronically test the wafer, a semiconductor substrate used for IC chip fabrication. The process of electronically testing the wafer is also known as wafer sorting. The testing of the individual die specifically at the wafer-level has been an essential part of the IC manufacturing process over the past four decades. A probe card is basically a point of connection in between the electronic test equipment and a semiconductor wafer. The probe card is mechanically docked to a prober, which is electronically connected to a tester. The main purpose of a probe card is to provide an electrical path between the test system and the circuit, which is on the wafer. This permits the testing and validation of the circuits at wafer-level, after which they are diced and packaged. The probe card consists of a printed circuit board (PCB) and a metallic element for contact purposes.
